The Shepherd

The figure of a shepherd is the symbol of Chilean Patagonia and a great example of human strength. He could live isolated for months in the countryside and often without any company besides his dogs and horses. He is a connoisseur of land, climate and nature in Patagonia.

The shepherd maintains his traditions which are a mixture between Chilean customs and a fusion with the Argentine gauchos, with whom today they share clothing and habits such as mate. This character emerged along with the first ranches and sheep that were brought in 1877 from the Falkland Islands.  Many shepherds arrived from the Island of Chiloé, located 1100 km from Magallanes.
